Wood Classes Starting Late Jan

Pinkerton Wood School for 2012 kicks off soon with classes starting at the end of Jan. There a new course where you get to make a simple box on Wednesdays nights, in addition to the existing make a stool classes which are on Monday nights. For more info click here.

Ncle Gallery Soc Walk Through

The Newcastle Gallery Society ended its annual workshop tour chez Pinkerton this year. Gallery Society members are given something something of a mystery tour - told to show up a certain place at a certain time and enjoy what they find along the way. This year they started at Peter Tilley's sculpture workshop, then were given directions to a local lino cut artists studio, before adjourning to Pinkerton's Fern Street warehouse where they finished with drinks and canapes. 

Lovely Sunday afternoon, thanks to Jan Hill of the Gallery Society for organising everything.

Maitland Library Circulation Desk

Just installed in the new circulation desk for Maitland Library. Working with MCC Senior Architect, Aaron Cook, Pinkerton created an arced desk in two parts from a range of Australian timbers, steam bent around the curve of the units.

The 32 metre long vessel, launched in 2003 and then re-imagined  through a mega two and a half year refit in Australia, is available to  venture tailor-made itineraries all year round. The international client  worked with exclusively with craftsmen from Newcastle, Azzurra Marine, and Stuart Pinkerton, on the project."

Redkite Autumn Shorn Ball

Pinkerton has donated a Mitre Table for the Redkite Autumn Shorn Ball. It will be included as one of the many great prizes in the silent raffle. Redkite provides real and practical support to children and young people with cancer and their families. Support is provided from the moment of diagnosis, through treatment, and on return home to the community. David Giffin will be guest speaker, talking about his son Joseph's childhood cancer and the family's personal experience through those rough few years.

Wood School Wrap Tea Party

Well the first wood school class has finished their stools and met up to celebrate last Saturday. Stu made a nutella cake, Anna brought Gidget the Curly Coated Retriever, Joey's wife Phoebe came along too and so we got her to pretend to be Tookie (who was studying for uni exams) and along with Sarah and Tobey everyone looked pretty pleased with themselves.

Pinkerton has landed a tasty project doing 15 pieces of custom furniture for Jamie Oliver’s soon-to-be opened Italian restaurant in Pitt Street in Sydney. Using enormous planks of recycled timber sourced locally through Round Two Timbers at Carrington, and featuring metalwork by Imagiron at Steel River, the suite of specially commissioned pieces includes numerous bar tables, waiters stations, menu boards and wine walls. Pinkerton has been working with a Sydney architect and Jamie’s design team in London to get the rustic look just right for the restaurant, which is the first Australian opening in Oliver’s worldwide ‘Jamie’s Italian’ chain. We'll post some images when the project is finished, for now here is a detail shot of a drawer on one of the chunky bread stations, and another of some recycled timber being glued up for benchtops.

Ian Burns Sculpture

Renting our other warehouse at the moment over at Steel River is NY based Australian artist Ian Burns, busy creating an installation piece for the Art Gallery of NSW. We won't even try to describe his incredible work - here's Ian in his own words:

"This sculpture, made for the entry vestibule of the Art Gallery of NSW  in Sydney, Australia, generates simulated video of objects traversing  space above the earth. This footage is achieved by recording high speed  video of space toys dropping past a high speed video camera. The  automation of this functionality is achieved by robotizing the operation  of a cheap consumer camcorder that includes a low resolution high speed  function."

Surfest Perpetual Trophy

We've been supplying timber bases for Julie Squires to fix her amazing Surfest sculptures on to for a number of years. This year Surfest decided that instead of getting new ones done each year to give away, that they would create a special piece that the winner keeps until the comp the following year. Pinkerton was therefore asked to provide a base that was a different, something a bit more creative than the standard rhombus of wood. 

As the trophy is to be named after the legendary Mark Richards, Stu asked MR for some of his templates and used those as his starting point. He carved a tryptych of board noses to form the base for Julie's beautiful homage to MR's gangly style, and its made from a fairly significant chunk of huon pine.

Sculpture Bar Re-Opens for Summer

The Sculpture Bar at the National Gallery of Australia has re-opened for summer. Pinkerton did the glow bars, ottomans and drinks tables. This year the new sponsor is Veuve Cliquot and so the bars are now glowing a refreshing orange.

HPS Lectern

The Year 6 gift to Hamilton Public School this year is a specially commissioned lectern by Pinkerton. To source the timber we went to Briggs warehouse in western Sydney and got to pick the exact sheet of veneer from the rack. This was a real eye opener - the warehouse was absolutely bustling with all teams busily getting national and international orders out the door on a Friday afternoon. We felt very privileged to be allowed on the shop floor and get to sift through the blackbutt stack to find the perfect sheet. And one of those eternal mysteries about veneer was uncovered - when they have a hole in the veneer sheet they literally sew-heat-gun a patch of the veneer in place to cover the hole. We saw a number of employees who had clearly spent the last 30 years perfecting this art. Incredible stuff, so many talented people involved in timber furniture production, from seed to table. 

Anyway enough about the timber, the lectern will be used in the new hall being built at Hamilton Public School. Thanks to Caroline Smith and Nicole Neave-Cowley of the HPS PnC for the commission and the indefatigable Principal David Jack in getting this one across the line.

Xmas Party/Showroom Opening

Still recovering. Over 150 peopled rocked up, the Mayor and Lady Mayoress stuck their head in, Barney called him Mayor Quimby, Agnes won the coffee table, the kids had a ball. Kicked the last stragglers out around midnight... big thanks to Tracy at Feast Catering, Tosh at Big Time Wine, Kelly at Eventability Newcastle and everyone who came along. Happy Christmas.

Jean's Multi-media Solution

Jean Hay had acquired a number of different pieces over time to accommodate the tv, stereo, computer, printer, files and other storage items, leaving her with a jumble of various styles and sizes of furniture. She asked Pinkerton to simplify everything into to a single piece, and create a matching credenza for the other side of her living room. Both are made from solid Tasmanian Oak and the credenza features soft touch opening draws.
